Brandi Carlisle Exclusive Performance of “Hallelujah”

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Last night, our DUCK friend Gerard got to attend the fantastic charity event put on by world #1 men’s tennis doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan. The event took place at the exclusive Sherwood Country Club near Thousand Oaks, CA and featured matches by James Blake and legendary retired champion Andre Agassi.

At the end of the gala dinner and silent auction, the attendees were treated to performances by Grammy-winning artists and my former acquaintances from Nashville, Evan & Jaron as well as by singing sensation Brandi Carlisle.

Below is an exclusive video of Brandi’s cover last night of “Hallelujah.” She is extraordinary and a sweetheart! Pics to come as well!

Interview with Rocket

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

As promised a few weeks back, I was able to sit down with Lauren C. Rocket of the awesome Echo Park-based, punk, chick band Rocket. If you haven’t heard of them, you need to visit their myspace page immediately and check them out! www.MySpace.com/rocket. Lauren C. is the fab guitarist in the group and was kind enough to answer some questions. But before getting to that though, just who IS Rocket?

Mixing 60’s girl group innocence with 70’s decibel-damaging boulevard beat and 80’s glam wham swagger, Rocket can only be described as a volatile combination that leaves one wondering what the results would be if the Shangri-Las crashed the stage during an early Motley Crue gig.

Starting out as a threesome of Laurens, Rocket released their first album, the summer soaked, “Too Hot to be Bothered,” in 2005. Evolving into a five-piece rock ‘n’ roll circus later that year, their first-ever live show was a headlining, sold-out smash at the legendary Viper Room on the Sunset Strip. The lollipop-inspired E.P., “Girls With Candy Hearts” followed in early 2006.

Since then, the girls have driven coast to coast with the intentions of introducing the world to Rocket. Their first ever tour was 2006 Van’s Warped Tour. Warped tour soon followed with a direct support tour with the Suicide girls in fall 2006, direct support for Butch Walker in spring 2007 and as support for Horrorpops and The Pink Spiders in early 2008. Rocket has also opened for the likes of Rancid, Sugarcult, OK GO, Morningwood, The Sounds, The Supersuckers, Kill Hannah, and The Dwarves, and has toured with The Lashes.

In addition to their constant touring, In October of 2007 Rocket became one of the top 12 finalists on the Fox television series (and American Idol-spinoff) “The Next Great American Band.” Chosen from over 7,000 bands of all musical genres, Rocket was not only the sole all-girl band in the competition, but also the only band with a female vocalist. They remained on the show for four weeks.

Now, onto the interview….

What are 5 words that best describe the band’s music?
Fun, Rock, Glam, Pop, Punk.

What has been a surprising moment over the last 3 yrs that you can look back on now and say, “Wow! How’d that ever happen? We are so blessed!”
When I heard that we were touring with Butch Walker I thought I was going to die of a heart attack. I’m such a fan of his music.

What’s coming down the pike for Rocket for the remainder of the year?
We are doing a Midwest tour in June and July and then we are coming back here and we are going to start working on a NEW RECORD! We’re so excited. And then we’ll tour some more!

When will you be playing in LA next?
July? Not sure actually. www.Myspace.com/Rocket always has the most updated information.

Who writes the songs?
We all write the songs together, as a band. We all have really different musical tastes and that’s what creates our unique sound. Our bassist, Kristin, is really into stoner rock and doom metal and Our drummer Roxie and lead guitar player, Kelly are really into pop punk.
The other Lauren and I are both glam rock fanatics. When you put everything together you get the Rocket sound!

Do you ever get mistaken for Natasha Bedingfield?
In fact, I have-but just when my photo is on Perez Hilton. Haha. I also get mistaken for Cookie Monster quite regularly.

If someone wants to buy your songs, how can they get them?
Our first CD, “Too Hot to be Bothered” is totally out of print.
Sometimes lucky people find it on Ebay. I literally don’t even own a copy. We have our 2006 EP “Girls with Candy Hearts” in all the regular places…iTunes, Amazon.com, Ameoba and FYE. We used to be in Tower Records and Virgin Megastores but everything has closed down. It’s so sad. I buy CDs just so I can keep supporting brick and mortar record shops. There is nothing more fun than going through piles of CDs and records. That’s not to say I don’t own an iPod!

We also have a 2008 “Tour EP” that we are ONLY selling at our live shows. So you gotta come see us if you want it!

Rocket has had lots of exposure in print, on TV, and online over the last few yrs. What do you have to do every day to sustain the buzz about the band and try to get you guys to the next level?

I actually have no idea how we’ve gotten so much exposure. We just do what we do and people seem to like it. We’ve grown so much and changed over the past few years and I think that’s what keeps people excited and interested in us.

Is a European or Australian tour in the future?
Because we’re in Rocket, we do everything backwards. We released a CD before we ever played a live show. In the same vein, last fall we were supposed to tour China. And we’ve never even been to Canada! Anyway, we instead opted to appear on a certain FOX TV show and had to put that tour on hold. But yes, Europe, Asia, Australia…we want it all.

If you were Miss America, what would you do to curb the climbing
gas prices?

I would make sure I knew geography. Did you see that? Actually everyone
did on YouTube. What would I do? I would make it way easier to take
public transpo in LA. I think that I’ve maybe taken the bus once in my
whole life.

What’s your favorite place to eat in LA?
The band is more into food than anything else. I think at this point we
should own stock in Cafe 101. My favorite burritos are at Burrito King
on the corner of Alvarado and Sunset.

Where do you hope to be in 5 yrs?
In five years I want Rocket to be the next Spice Girls. So basically I
want world domination. And a Saturday morning cartoon.

What did you want to do when you were 5?
I think I wanted to be a veterinarian.

What’s the dorkiest thing about you?
My nickname is “Clucky.”

Jovanotti Is a Lyrical Genius!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Radio in the US is a bit of a farse. Stations play the same handful of songs from the same handful of artists. It’s a dying format. Satellite radio and the iPod have been killing it because it’s exciting to listen to what you want and to find something new and original out there. There’s more to music than the same Nickelback songs and Snoop Dogg raps on the radio.
About 8yrs ago, a good friend introduced me to an Italian rapper. The singer’s name is Jovanotti. His real name is Lorenzo Cherubini. Yes, he is indeed Italian. My friend became a bit obsessed with Jovanotti. I’ve had the fortune of listening to most of Jovanotti’s albums over the decade. His most recent album Safari was released in February 2008. I think it’s his best record to date. It even has great collaborations with musicians like Ben Harper, Michael Franti, and Sly & Robbie. The best song on the album is not even hip-hop influenced. It’s a ballad on the piano. The video is below.

Just How Cool Is Coldplay?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

First off, let me say that I had heard there was a new coldplay album coming out and that the single was on radio or iTunes or something. Then I saw the new iTunes commercial on TV featuring Coldplay and their new single, “Viva la Vida.” Wow! What a brilliant commercial and an even cooler song! Take a look at it below. It continues the typical iPod commercial animation using the same motif of palette and style. I think it’s just perfect. Maybe I’ll even go and buy one of those 3G iPhones next month!

http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/ipoditunes/2008/ads/apple_ipoditunes_sonic_20080520_r560-9cie.mov

I remember the first time I encounted Coldplay. It was around August 2001 and I was in Australia. Each year, they have a holiday called Daphodil day where money is raised for cancer. It’s a great cause. That year, the unofficial theme for Daffodil day was Coldplay’s “Yellow” off their debut album Parachutes. I was really impressed. I remember about a month later playing piano duo with a friend late one night in Nashville. We were chatting about everything there was to chat about in this world, in the wake of Sep. 11. Somehow Coldplay came up. I got introduced to “Trouble” at that point. I bought their second and third albums. Everyone kept being in awe over how the second album was “perfect.” I never got into it until about 7 months ago. I loved X&Y.

What strikes me most about “Viva la Vida” is that it seems like a reinvention of Coldplay. Yes, I am now going to compare Coldplay to the Beatles. It was during the Beatles second album Revolver that they began the course of reinventing themselves on each album. In fact, the opening of “Eleanor Rigby” represents one of those cool moments in music historiography where the Beatles incorporate a string quartet, in which none of them are playing. It is the first song where they are not playing the music in the song. It is change of texture and timbre that distinguish “Eleanor Rigby” as this seminal, critical junction for the Beatles. “Viva la Vida” does just that for Coldplay. It is Coldplay’s “Eleanor Rigby.” Well done!

What Kind of World Do You Want?

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Today is Memorial Day. Rather than writing a political or patriotic blog, instead I would like to ask the question, “What Kind of World Do You Want?” That’s a line from a Five for Fighting song off San Fernando Valley native John Ondrasik’s last album. You probably know Five for Fighting from great songs like “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” “100 Years,” and “The Riddle.”  “WKOWDYW” is also the name for an amazing website John has put together to raise money for charities like Autism Speaks. It’s a user-generated content based site, a la YouTube.

Basically, there are no sign up requirements. They don’t even want your e-mail address. People post videos about life issues or charities that affect them or that they’re passionate about. Many videos are affiliated with a charity. Anyone who visits the site and watches a video all the way through, will have roughly $1 donated to that charity. No strings. I’ve even checked with the organization manager. So I’d like to commend John Ondrasik for this great idea. If only more people would visit the site! So far, it has raised over $328,000.

So for Memorial Day, remember to ask yourself “What Kind of World Do You Want?”

Rocket to Rock the Knitting Factory

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I was on my way to Vegas back in December 2005 with my good friend Negendrin Padir for some R&R. Like Charles Barkley, we had dreams filled of dominance at the roulette wheel. On my southwest flight from LAX, I sat beside this alternative, bubbly, and cute girl named Lauren. We got to talking. Lauren was managing the website for alternative pin-up site Suicide Girls. She mentioned she was also in this fun, edgy punkish chick rock band called Rocket.

Fast forward nearly 3 yrs and Echo Park-based Rocket have made quite a splash on the music world. Not only have they appeared on FOX’s annoying reality show The New American Band, but Rocket tours up and down the coast with some loyal and devoted fans.

They will be playing this Thursday night, May 22 at Hollywood’s Knitting Factory. To hear clips of the Rocket’s music, visit their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/rocket

Tickets are $10 and doors open at 8 p.m.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some good pics of the girls and will be able to interview Lauren after the show.
