What Kind of World Do You Want?

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Today is Memorial Day. Rather than writing a political or patriotic blog, instead I would like to ask the question, “What Kind of World Do You Want?” That’s a line from a Five for Fighting song off San Fernando Valley native John Ondrasik’s last album. You probably know Five for Fighting from great songs like “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” “100 Years,” and “The Riddle.”  “WKOWDYW” is also the name for an amazing website John has put together to raise money for charities like Autism Speaks. It’s a user-generated content based site, a la YouTube.

Basically, there are no sign up requirements. They don’t even want your e-mail address. People post videos about life issues or charities that affect them or that they’re passionate about. Many videos are affiliated with a charity. Anyone who visits the site and watches a video all the way through, will have roughly $1 donated to that charity. No strings. I’ve even checked with the organization manager. So I’d like to commend John Ondrasik for this great idea. If only more people would visit the site! So far, it has raised over $328,000.

So for Memorial Day, remember to ask yourself “What Kind of World Do You Want?”
